This guide is by no means the end all be all guide on journaling. I’m simply stating what works for me so that you can pick and choose what works for you. A Lot of famous people are and used to be journaling. Some people like Anne Frank and Marcus Aurelius even got famous because of their journals. I first started journaling during vacations trips as a way to remember things and write down memories. Later I also started using it when I was home to process my thoughts.

Why it works for me

Anne Frank once said: “Paper is more patient than people.”. For me journaling is a form of therapy. I put my thoughts through my pen on the paper and out of my head. When I put the thoughts and feelings to the paper I can remove it from my mind. That way I can stop worrying. It also gives me something to look back on. In the future I can take my old journals and see how far I have come.

Tools I use

When it comes to journaling I’m quite old school. I use a ballpoint pen and a notebook. My day job as a DevOps Engineer means that I’m working behind a computer all day, so it feels nice to step away from it and just write on paper. For the notebook I have used both the Moleskine hardcover pocket and Moleskine soft cover XL. The Moleskine brand is expensive but I really like the paper that they use. I have ordered more pocket softcovers to have a supply on hand. My current journal is not a Moleskine but a Karst stone paper. I got a dotted one as a birthday gift and the writing experience is very interesting. So I decided to buy a Karst A5 hardcover for my next journal to see if I like it. So far I like it but I’m not sure if I like it enough to switch completely. I also added a pen loop so I can keep the pen with the notebook. For the pen I use the Parker Jotter. I really like the fillings in these ballpoint pens. Again, more expensive than the average ballpoint but quality wise it’s totally worth it for me.
